James Melberg has extensive experience in shaping public policy related to free trade through successful coalitions and grassroots efforts. He joined Wexler & Walker in 1992 to help manage the national coalition promoting passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement. The success of that effort progressed over the next decade to several pieces of legislation related to trade policy, including the:

 

  • General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade
  • Trade Promotion Authority
  • Central America Free Trade Agreement
  • Permanent Normal Trade Relations
  • American-Australian Free Trade Agreement
  •  

Mr. Melberg has also been involved in the numerous energy coalitions built and maintained by Wexler & Walker.

Before joining the firm, Mr. Melberg worked at Families USA, where he helped develop their grassroots department. He effectively advocated on behalf of low-income elderly and health care consumers in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

 

Mr. Melberg is active in Democratic politics, having volunteered on campaigns in local elections in the District of Columbia and in Wisconsin on the last two presidential (Kerry and Obama) and gubernatorial (Doyle) campaigns. 

Mr. Melberg graduated with honors with a BA from the University of Wisconsin and has an MA from Georgetown University. He was also granted a certificate for study at the Universidad de Belgrano in Buenos Aires.
